Strengthening abdominal muscles (with Ab Exercises) and losing body fat may seem like a simple concept, but actually putting it into motion is not as simple as it may seem. It will take patience, time, and dedication, along with other ‘alternate’ ab exercise techniques to remove the layers of body fat covering the abs but, in the end, the effort will be well worth it. There are many great ‘basic’ ab exercises that can help a person achieve the six pack abs they have always wanted.  Here are just a couple.

Basic Ab Exercises – The Crunch

To do a Crunch, a person will lie on the floor, with arms placed in front of the chest, or with hands slightly touching the temples. Keeping knees bent and placed flat on the ground, raise the shoulders and upper torso towards the knees, concentrating on using just abdominal muscles to complete. The most crucial part of this ab exercise is the initial flexing of the abdominal muscles as the shoulders are lifted off the floor. Exhale through the mouth on the way up, and inhale through the nose while slowing lowering the back down to complete this ab exercise.

Basic Ab Exercises – The Leg Lift

Leg Lifts are ab exercises that are done by lying on the floor with legs straight out and hands at the side. The legs are then lifted straight up, with careful attention being paid to NOT bending the knees at all. Next, lower the legs and repeat, being careful not to let the legs touch the floor. Hanging from a pull up bar and raising legs all the way up to the bar is also a very beneficial ab workout.

Basic Ab Exercises – Jackknife Sit-ups

Jackknife sit-ups are ab exercises that are completed by lying down flat on the floor, face-up, and placing hands on the ground at the sides of the body for balance. Next, raise the knees and torso at the same time so that the knees and face meet at an invisible line extending from the pelvis. A successful jackknife sit-up will result in a person being able to kiss their knees at the top of the motion. For added benefit, place a weight between the feet.

Basic Ab Exercises – Static Holds

A Static Hold is an abdominal exercise that is done by putting the body in the push-up position, but with the whole body and elbows on the floor and flat. Also known as the plank position, this will train the core of the body to hold the body in place. Hold this position for as long as possible and then relax. You should see a gradual improvement in the hold time with each passing week.  Don’t be surprised if you can’t hold the position for very long as it’s harder than it appears.
